Methods of Melancholy
Domiana's Creative Process

"Marked by decay or decline, characterized by or appealing to self-indulgence, tending toward artificial and unconventional subjects."

The creation of the music of Domiana is concept-oriented. We begin with a particular idea we want to express or a mood we seek to create. All the various instrumetal and vocal elements are built around the particular mood or chosen idea. This music of Domiana is meant to be oriented to the imagination and fantasy. While elements of real life experience do creep in, it is essentially fiction. An artificial world that mirrors and distorts the real one.

We are strong believers in the idea that music is essentially a form of storytelling. Sometimes the stories and characters are obscure, but they are always present.

We draw on a variety of inspirations from an endless sea of sources. Some are musical, some are literary, some from film and art or even just passing moments. We also draw on elements of dreams, nightmares, fantasy, accidents, chance, the unconscious, coincidence and synchronicity. Essentially we seek to capture the mood or feeling of the element which inspires us, and portray it in art. Our art is not just the recording, it is the song, the image, the stage, the word.

The tools used are familiar: a guitar, a bass, a keyboard, a sequencer, microphones, a computer and software, some toys, some archaic samplers and synthesizers, turntables, VCRs, tape recorders, trash and found objects. All are merely a means to an end. We do not praise the machines; they are all subverted to the creation of mood or idea of the piece. They all serve the master, which is the song.

We employ a variety of creative methods in the creation of songs, some traditional song-writing techniques, some surrealist techniques, some experimental, some abstract. Sometimes accidents reveal the will of the unconscious creative mind. The ongoing creative process of Domiana is sometimes calculated, sometimes chaotic, sometimes bordering on the mystical. Seances, self-hypnosis, trance states, religious visions, prophecies, electrical or mechanical abberations and malfunctions -- all are part of our process.

Ultimately it is transformation we seek. The musical and theatrical alchemy of the ordinary world. We seek to subvert, corrupt and exaggerate the commonplace -- to open the doors of imagination for those who might hear us.
